Its one honest weakness is those exposed screws, the rubber gasket washers under the heads age in our sun, so the screws want checking and snugging roughly every 10 to 15 years. Standing seam locks panels together over concealed clips, no exposed fasteners anywhere on the field of the roof. It costs more, and it earns it: nothing to back out, nothing to re-gasket, Kynar-class paint finishes that hold their color for decades, and the crisp architectural look that’s showing up on new builds from Evans to Hammond’s Ferry. If you’re putting metal on the home you plan to grow old in, this is usually the version we spec.

Both go down over solid decking with proper underlayment on houses, which, incidentally, is why a modern metal roof doesn’t sound like the barn roof your grandfather had. That rain-on-a-drum racket comes from panels over open framing. Over decking, rain on metal is quieter than most people’s gutters.

What metal costs in the CSRA, in real numbers

Metal runs roughly one-and-a-half to two times the cost of architectural shingles.
