Ask a roofer what makes Martinez different and the honest answer is standing in every yard: canopy. The subdivisions here went in forty and fifty years ago, and the water oaks and loblolly pines planted alongside them are now full-grown giants leaning over every ridge line from Washington Road to West Lake. That’s the character of the place, and it’s also why roof repair in Martinez is its own discipline, more limb strikes, more clogged valleys, more shaded slopes growing things shingles hate.
CCY Roofing has been running repair calls here since 2013. Family-owned, based in Aiken, licensed in Georgia and South Carolina, same phone number from the start. Repairs aren’t our consolation prize when we can’t sell a replacement, they’re a third of what we do by design, because about one inspection in three ends with a repair quote instead of a replacement pitch. Most fixes run $300 to $1,500 and get scheduled the same week. This page walks through the repairs Martinez roofs actually need, how we track a leak to its real source, and how to think about repair-versus-replace on an older roof. The wider view lives on our roofing in Martinez page, and the regional version at roof repair across the CSRA.
Start with the slowest problem, because it causes the most damage per year of neglect: pine straw. Every loblolly within reach of your roof sheds constantly, and the straw doesn’t blow off the way leaves do. It mats. It settles into valleys, packs in behind chimneys, and builds little dams along dead spots where two rooflines meet. Each mat holds rainwater against the shingles for days after a storm passes, and shingles are built to shed water, not to soak in it. Give that arrangement a few Georgia summers and the valley, the exact channel your roof depends on most, rots from the outside in. On Martinez inspections, valleys are where we find trouble first and most often.
The oaks contribute differently. Water oaks are notorious self-pruners; they drop limbs in every gust front, and a falling limb doesn’t need to puncture anything to cause a leak. A glancing hit cracks shingles and bruises the mat underneath, damage that’s nearly invisible from the ground and doesn’t drip until a season or two later. The overhanging branches also abrade tabs on windy nights, wearing granules off in stripes.
None of this means cutting down the trees that make these neighborhoods worth living in. It means a Martinez roof earns an inspection more often than one on a bare-lot street in a newer suburb, and ours are free.
The ceiling stain is almost never under the hole. Water gets in at a flashing gap or a cracked shingle, rides a rafter or the top of the insulation for six or ten feet, and drops where it feels like it. On the 1980s two-stories off Flowing Wells Road, with their intersecting rooflines and additions, a single stain can have four plausible sources. Guessing wrong means you pay to fix something that wasn’t broken while the real entry point keeps working.
So we don’t guess. We walk the roof and the attic both, in that order, tracing the water trail backwards, stain, sheathing discoloration, rusted nail tips, then the daylight or the failed detail above it. We photograph the actual entry point and put the picture in your written report, so you’re never taking a stranger’s word about a place you can’t see. The quote that follows is exact and itemized, and the number on it is the number on the invoice. When the fix is done, you get after photos too, because nobody should have to climb their own second-story ladder to verify our work.
If a storm caused the damage, a limb through the decking, tabs peeled by straight-line wind, we’ll tell you before you spend repair money, because that may belong in an insurance conversation instead. Our storm damage & insurance restoration page covers how that process works in Columbia County.
Most of what we fix in Martinez falls into a short list, and it’s worth knowing the shape of it:
Pipe boots. The rubber collars around plumbing vents split in the sun, and they are the single most common leak source we find anywhere in the CSRA. A $300-class fix that prevents thousands in drywall and insulation damage.
Valley rebuilds. The pine-straw casualty described above. We strip the valley, replace any soft decking per sheet, seal it with ice-and-water membrane, and reshingle, a permanent fix, not a caulk job.
Wind-lifted tabs and creased shingles. Gust fronts and Helene’s leftovers. Individual shingles can be replaced and sealed if the surrounding field is sound.
Chimney and sidewall flashing. A lot of Martinez flashing is original 1980s metal that has expanded and contracted through several thousand Georgia temperature swings. Resets and counter-flashing repairs stop the sneaky leaks that only show in wind-driven rain.
Nail pops and decking soft spots. Small, cheap, and worth catching early; decking replacement is priced per sheet, quoted before we cut.
Nearly all of it lands between $300 and $1,500, scheduled the same week, with active leaks jumped to the front of the line.
When the damage can’t wait, a limb through the sheathing, water running in during the storm itself, the sequence changes. We tarp first, anchored and sealed rather than draped, and we photograph the damage before covering it, in case the fix belongs on an insurance claim rather than your credit card. Martinez saw plenty of both during the February 2014 ice storm and again with Helene, and the roofs that fared best afterward were the ones dried in fastest.
This is the question under every repair call in a neighborhood where most roofs are past twenty: is this fix a good investment, or am I bailing a sinking boat? Our rule is simple. If the roof around the failure is sound, granules intact, tabs flexible, decking solid, a repair is real money well spent, and we’ll happily take $450 to give your roof five more years. If the failure is just the first symptom of a field that’s failing everywhere at once, we’ll show you photos of why, and the money conversation changes.
What we won’t do is let you buy the same repair twice. When a roof reaches the stage where fixes hold just long enough for the next leak to open somewhere else, patching becomes the expensive option, and the honest recommendation shifts to roof replacement in Martinez, full tear-off, decking checked sheet by sheet, most homes done in a day, typically $8,000 to $15,000. The free inspection settles which side of the line your roof is on, with photos rather than salesmanship, and about a third of the time the verdict is the cheap one.
Plenty of roofers won’t roll a truck for a $300 pipe boot. We built the company on exactly those calls, because the homeowner with a small fix today owns the replacement decision in five years, and Martinez has a long memory for who treated them straight. Every crew carries workers’ comp, every quote is written and exact, and every repair is backed by a workmanship warranty on paper. The phone, (706) 250-1859, unchanged since 2013, is answered by a real person in Aiken, Monday through Saturday, with a 24/7 line for the limb-through-the-roof-at-midnight situation Martinez trees occasionally arrange. We run the same same-week repair service one exit over too: see roof repair in Evans.
Usually, functionally; sometimes, not perfectly. Many 90s colors and profiles have been discontinued, so we match the closest current equivalent in size, exposure, and blend. On a rear slope the difference disappears; on a front-facing slope we lay options against your existing field and let you judge before we nail anything. If a visible mismatch would genuinely bother you and the roof is near end-of-life anyway, we’ll say so, that’s occasionally the tiebreaker in a repair-versus-replace decision.
We’d rather you didn’t. Homeowner ladder falls hurt far more people than leaks do, and straw-covered shingles are slick even when dry. Ground-level maintenance, keeping gutters clear, watching for straw mats visible from the yard, noting limbs down after every blow, is genuinely useful. For the roof surface itself, have it cleared and inspected together; we’re already up there, and a valley check while the straw comes off is how small problems stay small.
Because the failure is vertical, not horizontal. Aged step or counter-flashing on a Martinez chimney can shed ordinary falling rain for years while a gap faces sideways, waiting for wind to drive water into it. That’s why the leak appears only in certain storms from certain directions, and why chimney leaks get misdiagnosed so often. We test the flashing directly, reset or rebuild what’s failed, and skip the tube-of-caulk ritual that buys one dry season and wastes your money.
Almost always yes. Water doesn’t wait politely for your replacement budget, an active leak rots decking, soaks insulation, and grows mold in the meantime, and every sheet of plywood it ruins adds cost to the eventual tear-off. A $300–$600 fix that keeps the structure dry until replacement is cheap insurance. The exception is a roof failing broadly enough that the repair can’t be warranted honestly; in that case we’ll tell you to put the money toward the new roof instead.
If something up there is dripping, lifted, or freshly dented by a water oak, get eyes on it this week. Free inspection, photographed report, exact written quote, most repairs $300–$1,500 and done within days. Use the thirty-second form or call (706) 250-1859, real person, Aiken, Monday through Saturday, storm line around the clock.
